In loving memory of Gloria Johnson

Gloria Danuta Twardowski Campos Johnson was born April 28, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her sudden passing on July 13, 2024 has torn a hole through the world.

Gloria approached life with immeasurable curiosity and energy. She had an infinite capacity to care for things, for causes and for people. She was a deep thinker and she loved to travel, to meet new people, to talk, and to bring people together. Gloria had an incredible ability to make everyone feel welcome. She exuded calm and love, and she had a smile that could light up any room.

Prior to Miami, Gloria attended and earned her degree in Social Sciences with a major of Sociology from the University of São Paulo. Gloria worked at the Chapel Art Show in São Paulo, and for the New York City Commission for the United Nations Sister City Program, and Arts International (Institute of International Education).

Gloria moved to Key Biscayne with her beloved husband Walter in 1992 and fell in love with the island’s beauty and sense of community. Her greatest passions were family #1, travel and music. She was her own kind of celestial body, with a gravitational energy that made her beloved by all.

After caring for her beloved husband Walter throughout his battle with early onset Alzheimer’s and making her way through 2 bouts with cancer, Gloria found her passion for community service. She reinvented a life of enjoyment with her beloved Brazilian community and dedicated countless hours to the Brazilian American Chamber of Commerce & the Centro Cultural Brasileiro.

In her chosen island home of Key Biscayne, Gloria devoted years to serving in the Vestry at St. Christopher’s, and she fully embraced the work of A Zero Waste Culture and of the Rotary Club. In each one of these organizations and institutions, Gloria did the work with gusto and love. Gloria made a good and meaningful life for herself. When faced with personal loss and personal health issues, she persevered and emerged radiating health and happiness.

Gloria Johnson is survived by her sister, children, grandchildren and extended family in the USA and Brazil. She was also mother and grandmother to many people beyond her immediate family.

Gloria will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.
